In a pivotal 5-4 vote, the Cape Elizabeth School Building Advisory Committee (SBAC) has chosen to recommend Option B as the preferred plan for addressing the town’s school infrastructure needs. The decision, reached during last night’s meeting, marks a significant step forward in the multi-year process of enhancing Cape Elizabeth’s educational facilities.
Option B will now be presented to the School Board for approval. If the School Board endorses the SBAC’s recommendation, the plan will then be forwarded to the Town Council for their consideration. Should the Town Council approve Option B, the final decision will rest with Cape Elizabeth voters during the November 2024 referendum.
The SBAC members who voted in favor of Option B were:
David Andrews
Larry Benoit
Michael Hussey
Penny Jordan
Tim Thompson
Those who voted against the recommendation were:
Corinne Bell
Patrick Cotter
Caitlin Sweet
Cindy Voltz
The close vote underscores the complexity of the issues at hand and the diversity of perspectives within the community. Supporters of Option B believe that it offers a fiscally responsible path forward, addressing critical needs while respecting the town’s financial constraints and preserving the campus footprint. Opponents, on the other hand, have advocated for new construction of the middle school, to reset the clock on future repairs, as outlined in Option E.
As the process moves forward, it is essential for all stakeholders – including residents, parents, educators, and town officials – to remain engaged and informed. The upcoming School Board and Town Council meetings will provide opportunities for further discussion and input, ensuring that the final decision reflects the collective vision and values of the Cape Elizabeth community.
Stay tuned for updates as this important initiative progresses, and don’t forget to make your voice heard in the November 2024 referendum.
